OnePlus is switching it up just a little bit. In addition to releasing the successor to the OnePlus 6T soon, the company is releasing another device called the OnePlus 7 Pro on May 14. A device which will be an upgraded version of the OnePlus 7 and one of the first phones to be available to 5G connectivity.
Since 2014, when the company launched its first OnePlus One, OnePlus has gotten a reputation of making phones with premium specs at cheap prices. However, the strategy of selling high end phones at low prices is getting more difficult to pull off every year. OnePlus in recent years has had one of the highest increase in cost from model to model. It makes it interesting to see what OnePlus’ next flagship will look like and how much it will cost.
Until we know more on the release date, read to see what has been confirmed and what is still just a rumor.
Confirmed: Launch Date of the OnePlus 7 Pro variant
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau on April 22 confirmed that the rumored OnePlus 7 Pro is indeed real and will have 5G connectivity. OnePlus has confirmed that its OnePlus 7 series will make its official debut on May 14 at 11:00 am E.T, making it a little earlier than last year’s launch. The company will hold launch events at New York, London, Bangalore, Beijing and India.
As of now, it is unclear whether both the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro will both be launching on the same day. But serial leaker OnLeaks reported we’ll seeing both variants on May 14. He also tweeted a few specs.
The OnePlus 7 would have a 6.4-inch flat display and a dual rear camera that includes a 48-megapixel lens. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7 Pro would have 5G connectivity and a 6.64-inch curved screen. It’ll also have a pop-up front-camera and a triple rear camera set up with an ultra-wide lens.
Confirmed: It won’t have wireless charging
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed at Mobile World Congress 2019 that the next OnePlus will not have wireless charging. He pointed out that wireless charging would not be as fast as the signature Dash Charging Technology the phone already has. He considers wireless charging to be far inferior.
This however, doesn’t mean there is no future for wireless charging in the company. But it seems they have other things to worry about at the moment, such as the overheating.
Confirmed: Triple rear camera
On April 25, OnePlus from their twitter account, posted a GIF with a schematic of a phone with three rear cameras. It also used the hashtag “OnePlus 7 Pro”. This isn’t surprising as triple rear cameras have been appearing on more phones, such as the Galaxy S10 and the Huawei P30.P
Unconfirmed: It might have a pop-up selfie camera
SlashLeaks recently leaked an image of the OnePlus 7 and a phone case, showing a cutout hole on the top edge of the case. This has led to the suggestion that the device will have a pop-up camera, similar to the ones we’ve seen on the Oppo F11 Pro and Vivo Nex.
The previous mock-ups also showed no notch for the front-facing camera, which would make sense if the phone has a pop-up selfie camera. However, the reported leaked image and phone case, the OnePlus 7 is seen to have a teardrop notch.
Possible price tag
Onleaks also posted the OnePlus 7 is likely to come at the price $569. This is in line with the prices of its predecessors, given OnePlus’ strategy of providing high-end devices, at upper mid-range prices. They also posted a couple of specs which include a 6.5-inch display, android 9.0 Pie, two storage options, a whopping 4,000-mAh battery and a snapdragon 855 chipset. The triple rear camera was listed to have a 48-, 20-, and 5- megapixel cameras, while the front has a 16-megapixel camera.
According to a recent leak, the OnePlus 7 Pro – which will be made available in 6GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB and 12GB/256GB variants – will fetch €699, €749 and €819, respectively. There’s no word yet as to how much the lesser-spec OnePlus 7 will fetch.
Unconfirmed: The OnePlus 7 Pro could be the fastest phone yet
The OnePlus 7 Pro could be the fastest Android phone yet, according to early benchmark scores posted on Geekbench. The listing, which refers to the device as the OnePlus GM1917, confirms that the flagship will pack a Snapdragon 855 processor and 12GB of RAM. It also reveals that it could surpass the Galaxy S10+ in terms of performance; the OnePlus 7 Pr0 earned 3,526 and 11,101 points in single-core and multi-core tests, compared to 3,429 and 10,624.
